Days after taking steps toward joining the French-led Future Combat Air System (FCAS) sixth-generation fighter program, India has entered discussions with its rival, the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), after being granted “dialogue partner” status.
According to The Tribune, India and the UK held detailed discussions before New Delhi was nominated for the role, citing unnamed British officials.
GCAP is a joint fighter-development initiative between the UK, Italy, and Japan, aimed at delivering a next-generation combat aircraft by 2035. The aircraft is intended to eventually replace the Eurofighter Typhoon operated by Britain and Italy. In comparison, FCAS is expected to reach full operational capability during the 2040s.
As a dialogue partner, India will reportedly be able to engage with the three GCAP member nations on various aspects of the program, including development progress, technologies, and planned capabilities.
Earlier in August, Canada joined GCAP as an observer, providing Ottawa with greater access to the program. The UK government said this includes discussions related to industrial collaboration and long-term delivery plans. Although Canada does not have decision-making authority, its involvement could support future discussions about its potential participation and contribution to GCAP.
The GCAP fighter is being developed by BAE Systems of the UK, Leonardo of Italy, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd. through their joint venture, Edgewing. The venture recently secured a £4.6 billion ($6.23 billion) contract from the UK government to advance development of the next-generation aircraft.
India’s Sixth-Generation Fighter Opportunity
India’s interest in international sixth-generation fighter initiatives comes as the country continues developing its own fifth-generation combat aircraft, with induction currently expected around 2035.
Several nations have already deployed fifth-generation fighters, while the US F-22 Raptor became the first operational aircraft in this category and has now been in service for approximately two decades.
China has also rapidly expanded its advanced combat-aircraft capabilities after decades of dependence on Russian aircraft and technologies. The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) estimates that China operates around 300 J-20 fifth-generation fighters. Meanwhile, the Pentagon has reported that China has begun flight testing two sixth-generation fighter prototypes.
Unlike fifth-generation aircraft, where stealth remains a central feature achieved through low-observable airframe designs, internal weapons bays, and radar-absorbent materials, sixth-generation warfare is expected to encompass a much broader combat-air system.
Future sixth-generation capabilities are expected to combine advanced stealth, sophisticated sensors, artificial intelligence, secure networking, electronic warfare, and the ability to operate alongside uncrewed combat aircraft.
For India, participation in a sixth-generation fighter program could provide valuable exposure to emerging technologies, design methodologies, and advanced aircraft-development processes. However, deeper involvement would also require substantial financial commitments and could place additional pressure on resources allocated to India’s indigenous fighter programs.
India may also face a limited window to decide on deeper participation. Leonardo CEO Lorenzo Mariani reportedly stated at the Farnborough Airshow that any new partner would need to join the program by the end of 2026. This gives New Delhi relatively little time to evaluate the strategic benefits, technological gains, industrial opportunities, and financial implications of becoming a full GCAP participant.
