FN Herstal has unveiled a modernized version of its iconic FN MAG machine gun, introducing the FN MAG TACTICAL with Long Rail to better support the increasing use of advanced electro-optical and thermal targeting systems in contemporary combat operations.

Widely regarded as one of the most successful general-purpose machine guns ever produced, the 7.62×51 mm NATO FN MAG serves in more than 90 countries. The latest upgrade focuses on enhancing user interaction and accessory integration rather than altering the weapon’s proven core design.

At the heart of the modernization is a new 11-inch monolithic rail system that offers approximately 14 inches of continuous mounting space for optics and accessories. This allows operators to combine multiple sighting devices, including day and night optics, while maintaining the use of traditional iron sights.

Designed to meet the demands of modern infantry forces, the new configuration improves flexibility without compromising the FN MAG’s renowned reliability and battlefield performance.

Additional upgrades include a redesigned feed cover equipped with ambidextrous controls and an automatic hold-open mechanism that simplifies loading and weapon servicing. The reinforced feed cover can support optics weighing up to 2.5 kilograms and includes a protective stop to prevent damage to mounted equipment.

FN has also introduced an adjustable tactical stock, enabling soldiers to tailor the weapon to individual preferences for improved comfort, weapon control, and sight alignment. Importantly, the new enhancements can be retrofitted to existing FN MAG platforms as well as the M240 and L7A2 machine guns currently operated by US and UK forces.
