Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has partnered with Canada-based E3 Lithium to explore incorporating domestically sourced lithium into the supply chain for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP). The collaboration also extends to assessing how Canada’s lithium production could support future international projects.

Lithium-ion battery technology provides greater energy storage compared to conventional lead-acid systems, allowing submarines to operate underwater for longer periods. By working with E3 Lithium, TKMS aims to localize a key component, enhancing its competitiveness in the more than $30 billion submarine procurement program.

TKMS is one of two shortlisted bidders for the CPSP, alongside South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean, with the project involving the delivery of 12 conventionally powered submarines for the Royal Canadian Navy.

E3 Lithium is a leading developer in Canada’s lithium industry, possessing one of the largest lithium resource bases in the country. Its Clearwater Project is expected to reach an annual production capacity of up to 36,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium.

As part of the partnership, E3 will provide technical expertise in lithium extraction, development, and processing to support the establishment of a secure supply chain for the submarine program and potential global opportunities. The agreement also includes collaboration on research, investment initiatives, and technology transfer.
