Austal Australia and Greenroom Robotics have unveiled a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) system capable of converting conventional ships into autonomous vessels within just five days.
The launch expands on a 2024 collaboration between the two Western Australia-based companies, merging Austal’s naval shipbuilding expertise with Greenroom’s AI capabilities to accelerate automation across both defense and commercial fleets.
The new suite incorporates Greenroom’s proprietary GAMA and Lookout+ programs, which process data from onboard cameras and sensors to enable self-navigation and collision avoidance without human control.
These applications are integrated with Austal’s MARINELINK Prime digital monitoring and control system, supporting safe and efficient autonomous operation.
During a Royal Australian Navy sea trial, the integrated software performed 148 autonomous collision-avoidance maneuvers across a 705-nautical-mile (1,306-kilometer/811-mile) test route, demonstrating strong potential for broader fleet deployment.
