Leonardo DRS and KNDS have formalized a strategic partnership to jointly propose a combat-proven, self-propelled howitzer to meet the US Army’s next-generation artillery needs.
At the heart of the bid is the Caesar 155mm wheeled howitzer, designed by Nexter, the French arm of KNDS. Offered in 6×6 and 8×8 configurations, Caesar integrates digital fire control, rapid shoot-and-scoot capability, and precision engagement at ranges beyond 40 kilometers.
The artillery platform is operational within several NATO forces, including France, Denmark, and Estonia, and has demonstrated its effectiveness in Ukraine. The Leonardo DRS–KNDS alliance said the proposal will provide a digitally enabled, mobile artillery solution aligned with the Army’s priorities for modernization, interoperability, and fast fielding.
The announcement comes as the US Army restarts its self-propelled artillery acquisition effort after terminating the ERCA program in 2024. The new initiative emphasizes networked systems with enhanced reliability and reduced maintenance demands.
Industry activity in the sector remains strong: BAE Systems is advancing an upgraded M109A7 Paladin, Hanwha Defense has positioned its K9 Thunder variant for US partnership, and Germany’s PzH 2000 continues to set the benchmark for NATO artillery performance and combat-proven capability.
