The NATO Support and Procurement Agency has placed an initial order with Rheinmetall for 120mm tank ammunition on behalf of multiple NATO member states.

Estimated at around €200 million ($237 million), the deliveries will proceed under a framework contract signed in 2025. The procurement is intended to restore and strengthen ammunition inventories for main battle tanks deployed across NATO forces.

The agreement operates under the Basic Contractual Instrument (BCI), which enables participating nations to acquire 120mm rounds via the NSPA. According to Rheinmetall, the BCI outlines the governing contractual framework and comprehensive technical standards for different types of 120mm tank ammunition.

Proven Smoothbore Capability

Since entering service in 1980, Rheinmetall’s 120mm smoothbore gun has established itself as the benchmark tank armament among German forces, NATO members, and allied militaries worldwide. It serves as the primary weapon system on platforms including the Leopard 2 and the M1 Abrams.

Building on decades of operational experience, Rheinmetall continues to refine and expand its 120mm ammunition family. The lineup features APFSDS rounds for defeating advanced armored threats, high-explosive multi-purpose munitions suitable for personnel and fortified targets, and practice ammunition that mirrors the ballistic performance of operational rounds for realistic training.
