The Defense Threat Reduction Agency has selected Battelle for its STEP 2.0 contract, tasking the organization with advancing a major biological threat reduction initiative.
Valued at $52.9 million for the base period and up to $93.3 million in total potential funding, the contract falls under DTRA’s Global Threat Reduction Directorate. The directorate works to prevent and counter weapons of mass destruction, including CBRN threats, frequently coordinating with allied nations.
Under the program, Battelle will contribute to US biodefense preparedness by developing and applying scientific and technical capabilities aimed at mitigating both anticipated and emerging biological hazards, thereby supporting military readiness.
Based in Columbus, Ohio, Battelle operates as a nonprofit R&D institution serving government and industry clients in sectors such as defense, public health, energy, and environmental protection.
Among its recent defense engagements is a $25.35 billion ceiling contract supporting the Department of Defense in electronics and software technology development, along with sustained CBRN testing and training services at the US Army’s Dugway Proving Ground.
Additionally, in December, Battelle joined a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency competition exploring drone-supported medical response operations, contributing to research on human-machine collaboration in mass casualty response scenarios.
