India has introduced a comprehensive military reform strategy that outlines plans to strengthen and reorganize its armed forces through 2047.
Known as “Defence Forces Vision 2047,” the initiative is designed to build a more unified and capable military structure as the country responds to changing regional and global security dynamics.
The roadmap is organized into short-, medium-, and long-term implementation phases covering force modernization, institutional reforms, and future capability development.
A major objective of the plan is to improve interoperability among the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force through deeper joint operations, integrated procurement systems, and coordinated planning structures, replacing more traditional service-centric approaches.
The strategy also emphasizes advanced technology adoption, innovation, and updated military training as modern warfare increasingly relies on multi-domain and technology-enabled operations.
Defense self-reliance forms another core pillar of the roadmap under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat policy, which aims to expand domestic defense production and reduce dependence on imported military equipment.
At the same time, India has continued leveraging selective foreign collaborations to support technology transfer, co-development, and local manufacturing programs that strengthen the country’s defense industrial capacity.
$81 Billion Defense Modernization Effort
India’s long-term reform plans are being reinforced by higher defense spending and accelerated procurement activity.
Earlier this year, the government allocated 7.85 trillion rupees ($81 billion) for defense, supporting purchases of advanced aircraft, naval vessels, drones, and weapons platforms.
Roughly three-quarters of defense acquisitions are reserved for Indian industry as part of the country’s localization push.
The budget also increased funding for the Defence Research and Development Organisation and for digital defense infrastructure projects, including dedicated investments in military optical fiber communication networks.
