Indian private defence manufacturer SSS Defence has announced a major modernization effort for its sniper rifle platforms with the official unveiling of the Viper Mach 2.

Headquartered in Bengaluru, the company described the upgraded rifle as the beginning of a comprehensive redesign programme intended to enhance the performance and capability of its precision weapon systems.

Almost a decade after the original Viper sniper rifle was introduced as one of India’s earliest indigenous sniper weapon platforms, SSS Defence is now presenting a significantly updated version tailored to evolving battlefield and tactical requirements.

The Viper Mach 2 features a completely redesigned chassis and body structure, with the company highlighting several key upgrades, including:

A lighter overall build
Improved ergonomics and styling
Modernized features aimed at enhancing usability and operational efficiency

The new rifle retains the core capabilities of the original Viper while incorporating advanced improvements suited for military, special operations, and law enforcement users.

Evolution of an Indigenous Sniper Platform

The original Viper platform was chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO / .308 Winchester and developed as a sub-MOA sniper rifle capable of accurate engagements beyond 1,000 meters. Designed specifically around Indian operator ergonomics, it was intended for both military and police tactical operations.

Alongside the Viper, SSS Defence also developed the Saber sniper rifle chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum, capable of long-range engagements exceeding 1,500 meters. The two rifles represented a milestone for India’s private defence sector as the country’s first sniper platforms fully designed and manufactured by a private company.

SSS Defence’s sniper systems have already drawn interest from state police forces within India as well as international buyers. The launch of the Viper Mach 2 aligns with India’s broader push toward indigenous defence production under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

In addition to sniper rifles, the company manufactures a wide range of defence products including P72 assault rifles, G72 submachine guns, suppressors, barrels, and related systems through its advanced production facilities.

The redesigned Viper Mach 2 is expected to offer greater modularity, lower operator fatigue, and improved compatibility with modern optics, suppressors, and tactical accessories, making it more competitive in domestic and global markets.

SSS Defence has suggested that further upgrades across its sniper rifle portfolio are already in development, with industry observers now looking forward to detailed technical data, field trials, and possible future induction plans.

The latest development reinforces the company’s growing reputation within India’s private defence industry as a provider of advanced and cost-effective weapon systems designed for modern combat requirements.
