Rheinmetall and the Italian government have signed a memorandum of understanding to upgrade “hundreds of thousands” of MATS anti-tank mines held by the Italian Army.
The program, led by Rheinmetall’s subsidiary RWM Italia SpA in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Defence’s Agenzia Industrie Difesa, will focus on development and testing activities to extend the mines’ service life by converting them to the MK2 standard.
The upgraded MATS MK2 design, built on the existing blast-resistant metallic structure, is intended to enhance safety while improving operational effectiveness.
RWM Italia will act as the design authority, with upgrade work carried out at its facilities in Italy, including sites in Brescia and Sardinia.
The project is expected to commence within a year and generate additional employment opportunities across both organizations.
