Indra Group of Spain and Hanwha Aerospace of South Korea have formalized a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on next-generation self-propelled artillery for the Spanish military.

The partnership is centered on developing a new line of tracked artillery systems based on Hanwha’s K9 Thunder 155mm howitzer, with a strong emphasis on technology transfer to enable domestic production and enhance Spain’s defense industrial capabilities within NATO.

According to Spain’s July 2025 procurement roadmap, the program includes 128 tracked artillery units, 120 ammunition supply vehicles, 11 command and control systems, and 21 recovery vehicles.

Advancing Sovereign Capability
As part of the agreement, Indra will locally manufacture hull structures and integrate its in-house technologies, including mission systems, full-spectrum situational awareness, battlefield management, and secure communications.

Additionally, Indra will design protected command post systems. The jointly developed platforms are expected to feature advanced automation, extended-range precision firepower, and lower manpower requirements, positioning them as modern, future-proof solutions for the Spanish Armed Forces.
