The US Army has awarded Oshkosh Defense a contract for the delivery of 97 FMTV A2 Low-Velocity Airdrop cargo vehicles, comprising both 4×4 and 6×6 variants.

Designed to support Mobile Brigade Combat Teams, the FMTV A2 LVAD Cargo vehicles enhance operational mobility by enabling rapid resupply and transport of equipment in expeditionary and high-threat environments.

Included in the order are Arctic Kits that prepare the vehicles for sustained operations in extreme cold and remote regions, supporting the Army’s increasing focus on Arctic and cold-weather readiness.

The FMTV A2 LVAD platform enables the rapid aerial insertion of vehicles and supplies into contested zones, minimizing reliance on fixed infrastructure and improving operational flexibility.

Testing of the 4×4 FMTV A2 began in mid-2024, with three successful airdrop trials completed at Yuma Proving Grounds in early 2025. The variant is offered in 2.5-ton and 3-ton cargo configurations.

The 2.5-ton Cargo Van can carry up to 5,000 pounds and provides 90 square feet of cargo space, while the 3-ton Cargo version increases payload capacity to 6,000 pounds, reaches speeds of up to 62 mph, and offers 145.8 cubic feet of cargo volume.

Meanwhile, the FMTV A2 6×6 variants completed airdrop qualification testing in 2024. Capable of transporting up to 8 tons, the platform features a cargo bed volume of 164.7 cubic feet, with the 8-ton Cargo model offering a 16,000-pound payload and a maximum speed of 60 mph.
