Rolls-Royce will deliver 350 mtu Series 199 engines to power new Boxer armored wheeled vehicles ordered by the German Armed Forces and international customers. The contracts were awarded by Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland.
Each engine supplied will be an eight-cylinder unit rated at either 530 kilowatts (710 hp) or 600 kilowatts (805 hp), with the first Boxer vehicles expected to be delivered in the first half of 2026.
The Boxer platform is an eight-wheeled modular armored vehicle that uses a standardized drive module combined with interchangeable mission modules. This modularity has enabled rapid development of multiple variants tailored to the operational needs of armies in Europe and beyond.
More than 2,000 Boxer vehicles have been delivered or ordered globally, all equipped with mtu 8V199 engines. According to Rolls-Royce, the Series 199 has emerged as one of the most widely fielded engine programs for military ground vehicles, with more than 4,500 engines supplied to NATO and partner nations.
To further build on this foundation, Rolls-Royce is expanding the Series 199 into a wider engine family designed to meet evolving performance requirements while remaining cost-effective. The roadmap includes upgraded eight-cylinder models, along with the development of a ten-cylinder engine generating up to 1,100 kilowatts (1,475 hp) and a twelve-cylinder version delivering more than 1,300 kilowatts (1,745 hp).
Central to the program is a high degree of component commonality across engine variants. This approach aims to simplify fleet sustainment, reduce logistical complexity, lower operating costs, and improve vehicle availability by enabling faster maintenance and easier parts replacement during operations.
