Germany has begun receiving GL-40 grenade launchers from Austria-based Steyr Arms under an expanded procurement tied to a 2024 agreement.
According to Steyr, initial deliveries have departed its Kleinraming production site, while an additional batch has been secured through an updated framework deal concluded in late February.
The original order covers 4,776 launchers and is part of Berlin’s ongoing defense modernization efforts, with the delivered systems incorporating minor modifications for military-specific requirements.
GL-40 Capabilities
The GL-40 is a 40mm grenade launcher engineered for flexible use, either as a standalone system or mounted on rifles such as the G95K, Steyr AUG (5.56mm), and the recently fielded G95A1.
Featuring a modular design, the launcher can be equipped with various sighting systems and accessories. It weighs around 1.7 kilograms and includes a compact frame, adjustable stock, and side-loading mechanism.
Its cold-forged build improves structural strength and accuracy retention under continuous firing conditions. Steyr emphasized that the GL-40 is already operational with international users and contributes to the capabilities of NATO-aligned militaries.
