The U.S. State Department has approved a potential $780 million sale of Javelin anti-tank missile systems to Poland.
Warsaw has requested 2,506 FGM-148F Javelin missiles and 253 Lightweight Command Launch Units, along with simulation rounds, tool kits, spare parts, training, and logistical support. The deal is expected to strengthen Poland’s territorial defense and help it align with NATO capability standards.
The FGM-148 Javelin is a man-portable, fire-and-forget missile designed to defeat heavy armor, including main battle tanks. Its infrared guidance allows operators to relocate immediately after launch, unlike wire-guided systems. The missile has an effective range of 65 meters to 4 kilometers, with a top-attack mode that targets a vehicle’s weakest armor.
The new Lightweight Command Launch Unit is 30% smaller and 25% lighter than the Block I version, yet provides double the target detection and recognition range. Improved ergonomics and reduced weight further enhance its usability for troops in the field.
