The US Navy has issued a call for defense contractors to propose designs for a new class of unmanned surface vessels (USVs) designed to transport containerized cargo.

Spearheaded by the Program Executive Office Unmanned and Small Combatants, the initiative seeks to enhance naval adaptability by quickly deploying modern, scalable autonomous platforms.

According to a request for white papers released by the Department of Defense, the vessels must feature a cost-effective, proven design capable of handling multiple mission profiles using standard ISO container modules. The design should also support assembly and maintenance at various shipyards.

Though no specific contract award date has been announced, the Navy plans to utilize the Other Transaction Authority (OTA) process to fast-track procurement and launch USV test platforms within 18 months of the award.

Submissions for the program will be accepted through August 2025.
