Global Military Products has secured a contract from the US Marine Corps to provide the Scorpion Light 81mm mobile mortar system, enhancing expeditionary firepower for distributed maritime and littoral missions. The agreement, whose value was not disclosed, comes after the system underwent operational evaluation during the Transformation in Contact 2.0 exercises in October, where new equipment is trialed by frontline units for feedback prior to large-scale adoption.
Integrated onto the Polaris MRZR Alpha 6×6 vehicle, the Scorpion Light offers highly mobile indirect fire capability, enabling Marines to fire up to eight rounds and reposition in under two minutes. Its digital fire control system automates targeting and re-aiming processes while supporting Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact, reducing crew workload and improving responsiveness. The mortar can interface with external fire control networks for broader interoperability. Designed for expeditionary mobility, the platform can be airlifted internally by aircraft such as the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey and the Boeing CH-47 Chinook, facilitating rapid insertion into austere environments. Developed by Spain’s Milanion NTGS in the mid-2010s, the system has since been adopted by French Special Forces and users in Saudi Arabia and India, and is currently deployed in Ukraine.
