The US State Department has authorized a possible $160 million sale of Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) to Canada.

Under the request, Ottawa seeks up to 60 JLTVs, nine JLTV cargo trailers, and associated communications and mobility systems, as well as lethality and survivability upgrades, spare parts, and repair support.

According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the proposed sale would bolster Canada’s ability to address current and emerging threats, improve operational performance in complex environments, and enhance burden-sharing in peacekeeping and international security operations.

Indiana-based AM General has been named as the prime contractor, with offset arrangements to be determined during negotiations.

The approval comes as Canada weighs diversifying its defense procurement away from the US. Its planned purchase of F-35 fighter jets from Washington remains under review, though military leaders reportedly support the acquisition.
