The US State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to Norway involving GBU-39B Small Diameter Bomb Increment I munitions, aimed at strengthening Norway’s precision strike capability.

Norway has requested 816 of the munitions in a package estimated at $113 million, which also includes spare parts, logistics, and technical support.

According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the proposed sale will boost Norway’s ability to address present and future threats while enhancing interoperability with the US and NATO allies.

Boeing has been named the prime contractor, with offset agreements to be negotiated with Norway. The Small Diameter Bomb system enables four 250-pound (113-kilogram) guided munitions to be carried on a single smart launcher, improving payload efficiency.

Equipped with a multi-purpose warhead, the GBU-39B can penetrate hardened structures or deliver blast and fragmentation effects against high-value stationary targets. Guided by a GPS-aided inertial navigation system, the bomb can be launched from fighter jets or bombers using either internal or external weapon stations, with a standoff range exceeding 60 nautical miles (111 kilometers).
