The US Army has awarded Kopin Corporation a $15.4 million contract to develop “ultra-bright, full-color” MicroLED augmented reality (AR) displays for soldiers, aimed at significantly improving battlefield visibility.
According to Kopin, this award reinforces its role as a key player in America’s defense innovation and domestic manufacturing base. The company emphasized that its MicroLED AR technology will provide daytime and nighttime readability, offering clearer visuals under bright sunlight or low-visibility environments, while also being more durable and energy-efficient than conventional displays.
These displays are designed to minimize visual disruptions during extended operations, thereby enhancing lethality, situational awareness, and mission effectiveness.
The program builds on Kopin’s earlier Soldier Display Trade Study and its Phase 2 Small Business Innovation Research contract for an extended reality prototype. Under the new deal, Kopin will also establish a US-based production capability through the Industrial Base Analysis program under the Army Contracting Command and the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
With more than four decades of expertise and over 400,000 defense vision systems delivered, Kopin continues to expand its military portfolio. In April 2025, the company secured a separate $7.5 million contract to provide microdisplays for a Department of Defense supplier.
