The U.S. Army’s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office has taken delivery of two prototype laser systems aimed at neutralizing drones. The weapons integrate AeroVironment’s LOCUST 20kW laser onto the GM Defense Infantry Squad Vehicle, producing a highly mobile counter-UAS platform. Capable of engaging small drones quickly and accurately, the system allows infantry units to operate independently of fixed defenses. Its ISV base provides rapid mobility and airborne deployment options, ensuring adaptability on the battlefield. Army leaders say the delivery marks a step toward equipping frontline forces with directed-energy tools, aligning with a broader strategy to integrate mobile laser defenses into future operations against swarming UAV threats.
