The US Army has awarded Northrop Grumman a contract worth over $200 million to produce XM1211 proximity-fuzed ammunition, enhancing short-range defenses against small UAV threats. Compatible with XM914 and M230LF chain guns, the round features a specialized fuze that detonates when close to a target, creating optimized fragmentation. Developed with key Army agencies and rapidly fielded in 2021, the XM1211 is now entering expanded production across Northrop’s multi-state facilities. Northrop is also advancing its SMART Demo rocket motor program. A recent test focused on the 22-inch SMASH!22 motor, assessing new production methods aimed at greater efficiency and reduced cost. Data gathered will support the follow-on BAMM!29 2.0 motor, slated for a 2026 test. Both systems incorporate additive-manufacturing components and updated tooling practices to streamline manufacturing timelines and broaden future applications.
