The US State Department has approved a potential $705-million foreign military sale of M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and associated equipment to Australia.
The proposed package includes 48 M142 launchers, M1084A2 resupply vehicles, M1095 trailers, training rocket pods, communication systems, spare parts, and logistical and program support.
Key industry partners in the deal include Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, Leonardo DRS, and Oshkosh Corporation.
According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), this sale aligns with US strategic objectives by reinforcing Australia’s defense posture and enhancing interoperability between the two nations’ armed forces.
Australia initially ordered 42 HIMARS launchers in 2023, following the system’s proven performance in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, to bolster its long-range and precision strike capabilities.
The country received its first HIMARS in March 2025, and during a multinational exercise in July, successfully test-fired a Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), hitting a target over 300 kilometers (186 miles) away in just over four minutes — a milestone that boosted Australia’s long-range strike capacity twenty-fivefold, according to Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy.
