Poland has taken delivery of 38 new M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks from the United States, the largest shipment to date under a 2022 foreign military sales agreement. The delivery also included 14 M88A2 Hercules recovery vehicles, designed to retrieve disabled or damaged tanks from the battlefield.

This batch moves Poland closer to fulfilling its order for 250 M1A2 SEPv3 tanks, the latest variant with upgraded protection, maneuverability, and advanced combat systems. The broader deal covers 26 M88A2 Hercules vehicles, 17 M1074 Joint Assault Bridges, training, logistics, ammunition, and associated support equipment. To date, Warsaw has received 85 Abrams tanks, adding to its fleet of K2 Black Panther, Leopard 2, and PT-91 tanks.

Before deployment, the new Abrams will be inspected at the Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne (WZL) plant in Poznan, which serves as a regional hub for Abrams maintenance. Deliveries will continue through 2026.

Developed by General Dynamics in the 1980s, the Abrams has been continuously upgraded. The latest M1A2 SEPv3 weighs 60,781 kilograms (134,000 pounds), measures 10 meters (32 feet) in length, and features composite metal-ceramic armor. Armament includes a 120mm main gun, a .50-caliber heavy machine gun, and M240 machine guns. Powered by a 1,500-horsepower Honeywell AGT1500 turbine engine, the tank reaches speeds over 64 km/h (40 mph) with a range of 418 kilometers (260 miles).
