The U.S. Army has awarded Raytheon a $1.7 billion contract to supply the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) for both the United States and Poland.
The order covers nine radars, along with engineering services, spare parts, program support, and joint development and testing. Poland will be the first international customer to integrate LTAMDS into its air and missile defense network.
LTAMDS, designed as a replacement for the Patriot radar, is a 360-degree active electronically scanned array (AESA) system. Following eight successful flight tests and achieving Milestone C, the radar has been cleared to enter low-rate initial production in early 2025.
The radar is a central component of the U.S. Army’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense System, which also incorporates Northrop Grumman’s Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS). Poland adopted IBCS in 2018 to modernize its WISŁA program, linking Patriot radars, launchers, and interceptors into a unified network.
In a related development, Poland’s state-owned Military Electronic Works (WZE) became the first international supplier for the LTAMDS program by signing a September agreement with Raytheon to produce energy storage assembly modules for the radar.
