Taiwan is preparing to take delivery of Mk 48 Mod 6 Advanced Technology heavyweight torpedoes from the United States between 2026 and 2028, following earlier schedule delays.
The ROC Ministry of National Defense budget proposal shows the Navy expects four simulator systems in 2026, followed by 14 torpedoes in 2027 and another 10 in 2028, according to the Taipei Times.
The sale, valued at NT$5.46 billion ($178 million), was first approved by Washington in 2017. While deliveries were postponed to 2030 due to production challenges at Raytheon, Taiwan now aims to re-align the timeline to its original 2028 goal.
The Mk 48 Mod 6, designed for submarine launch, will replace Taiwan’s aging German-made torpedoes. The weapon weighs 1,698 kilograms, carries a 295-kilogram warhead, and is capable of diving beyond 365 meters at speeds exceeding 28 knots.
Equipped with sophisticated sonar and digital guidance, the torpedo is designed for precision, adaptability, and future upgrades to counter evolving underwater threats.
