The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration has contracted Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace to deliver its Protector RS4 remote weapon stations for integration on the Swedish Army’s CV90 combat vehicles.
The contract—valued at over 400 million krona ($42.7 million)—supports the army’s upgrade from the baseline Protector Nordic (Vapenstation VS01) to the more advanced RS4 system. It includes provisions for additional units across other platforms.
Once fielded, the RS4 will be installed on three CV90 variants under the designation Vapenstation VS02. The system brings improved sensors, longer-range target engagement, and compatibility with multiple weapon types while ensuring crews remain safely under armor.
The CV90, manufactured by BAE Systems Hägglunds, is the backbone of Sweden’s mechanized force and is deployed in infantry, reconnaissance, and command roles. Sweden is acquiring new CV9035s and has transferred older CV9040s to Ukraine, reinforcing the need for modernization.
The RS4 has a weight range of 135–190 kilograms (298–419 pounds) depending on configuration and a height of 505–765 millimeters (20–30 inches) excluding weapon systems. Its sensor suite offers high-performance day/night capability.
The turret enables full 360-degree rotation at 90 degrees per second and an elevation range of –20° to +60° at 70 degrees per second, delivering rapid reaction and precise targeting.
Compatible armament includes Browning M2 and WKM-B 12.7 mm heavy guns, M249 5.56 mm weapons, and M240, UKM-2000C, and M134 Gatling 7.62 mm machine guns. It also supports MK19, MK47, and H&K GMG 40 mm grenade launchers with airburst munitions, non-lethal payloads, a 6.62 mm M240 coaxial kit, and integration of anti-tank guided missiles.
