Sweden’s arms procurement agency has signed a contract with Finnish shipbuilder Marine Alutech for the delivery of 20 watercraft to support the country’s amphibious battalions, replacing vessels previously supplied to Ukraine.
Valued at 130 million Swedish krona ($14 million), the order will see the new Watercat M9 model succeed the older Watercat M8, ensuring the battalions remain fully operational.
Deliveries are scheduled through 2028, starting with a pre-series boat followed by the remaining vessels.
The boats will transport personnel and equipment within the battalions’ operational and base areas. The M9 offers enhanced capabilities, carrying up to eight troops plus two crew members or smaller cargo loads.
With a low draft of about 40 centimeters (15.7 inches), the vessel can operate in shallow waters under 1 meter (3.3 feet), including rivers and coastal beaches. A diesel-powered water jet enables a service speed exceeding 30 knots (34.5 mph/55.5 km/h) at full load.
