The Swedish defense procurement authority has updated its agreement with MBDA to obtain additional Common Anti-air Modular Missiles (CAMM). The initial 2023 contract covered CAMM missiles along with the Sea Ceptor air defense system for integration on five Visby-class corvettes of the Royal Swedish Navy.
The Sea Ceptor installation will be part of the ships’ mid-life modernization scheduled to begin in late 2025. Saab, in partnership with MBDA, will conduct the upgrade work, aiming to deliver the first overhauled corvette by late 2026.
About the CAMM System
CAMM, the missile component of the Sea Ceptor air defense suite, uses vertical launch technology that produces an extremely low launch signature to reduce detection vulnerability. Its 25-kilometer (15.53-mile) range and 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) altitude capability allow it to counter multiple threats simultaneously with full 360-degree coverage.
The missile’s active RF seeker ensures robust, all-weather reliability without relying on expensive fire-control radars. Weighing only 99 kilograms (218 pounds), CAMM is suitable for vessels from compact 50-meter patrol boats to major warships such as frigates and destroyers.
