The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded Serco a five-year, £7.8 million ($10 million) contract to provide maintenance and logistics support for the EJ200 engines powering the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon multirole fighter fleet.
The agreement establishes a direct service partnership between Serco and the RAF, shifting responsibilities previously subcontracted through Rolls-Royce. Maintenance activities will continue at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, sustaining 26 technical and logistics roles.
Jointly developed by Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo, the Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, canard-delta wing aircraft that has served the RAF since 2003, supporting air defense, policing, and rapid response missions under the Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) framework.
Each EJ200 engine generates 90 kilonewtons (20,232 pounds) of thrust—180 kilonewtons combined—and incorporates lightweight, heat-resistant materials enabling sustained supersonic flight without afterburners. With advanced health monitoring, the engines can operate for up to 1,200 flight hours before requiring unscheduled maintenance.
