Saab has secured a 1.5-billion-krona ($162.9-million) contract from Sweden’s defence procurement authority to deliver Trackfire Remote Weapon Stations featuring advanced counter-drone capabilities.
The contract forms part of the Swedish Army’s modernization efforts under the Amphibious Battalion 2030 program, aimed at reinforcing amphibious and coastal defense operations while aligning Sweden’s forces with NATO operational standards.
Through this program, the Swedish Armed Forces plans to enhance combat effectiveness across archipelagos and littoral zones by fielding new capabilities such as mortar boats equipped with Patria’s NEMO system for indirect fire support, alongside Trackfire RWS to strengthen direct-fire engagement and counter-UAS defense.
The delivery of Trackfire systems is scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2028.
Built for modern battlefield conditions, the Trackfire RWS is capable of engaging targets while maneuvering and providing aerial and surface coverage when deployed on land vehicles, naval platforms, or fixed defensive installations.
A key feature of the system is its stabilized sensor package, which operates independently of the weapon’s movement and recoil. This configuration ensures continuous target observation and faster engagement cycles.
In counter-drone roles, Trackfire employs the 30×113mm M230LF Bushmaster chain gun as its primary effector, allowing precise and effective neutralization of uncrewed aerial threats using proximity-fused munitions.
The system also offers broad weapon compatibility, including the M2 12.7mm heavy machine gun, FN MAG 58 7.62mm GPMG, Mk19 40×53mm grenade launcher, and the H&K GMG 40×53mm grenade launcher, with options for integrating non-lethal systems and electronic jamming capabilities.
