To safeguard its strategic Black Sea gas venture, Romania plans to purchase a near-new Turkish warship, the TCG Akhisar, a Hisar-class offshore patrol vessel.
The proposed acquisition is estimated at 223 million euros ($260 million), with an additional 42 million euros ($49 million) required for full operational readiness, according to HotNews.
Parliamentary approval is still pending for the deal, which aims to protect the Neptune Deep Project—an offshore initiative spearheaded by OMV Petrom and Romgaz.
This project is anticipated to dramatically boost Romania’s gas production and potentially establish the nation as the EU’s leading gas supplier.
