Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH has entered into a strategic agreement with the Czech Ministry of Defence to provide full-scale maintenance for the Czech Army’s Leopard 2A4 tanks. Worth CZK 6.16 billion (around EUR 250 million) and spanning seven years, the deal supports the nation’s broader modernization drive to transition from legacy Soviet equipment to NATO-compatible systems.
The contract includes logistics, repairs, and spare parts supply, ensuring the tanks’ long-term combat readiness. Lubor Koudelka, Senior Director for Armaments and Acquisitions at the MoD, noted that securing dependable service support was vital for tank operation and highlighted the Leopard platform’s role in reducing Czech dependence on Russian-origin systems.
The fleet to be maintained includes 14 tanks purchased from Rheinmetall in a 2024 agreement, along with 30 tanks—comprising both main battle and recovery variants—donated by Germany in return for Czech military aid to Ukraine. With Rheinmetall handling both the initial delivery and ongoing maintenance, the partnership provides continuity and standardization, reinforcing the Czech Republic’s alignment with NATO and Western defense frameworks.
