The Norwegian government has formally chosen the UK as its partner for the acquisition of next-generation frigates, confirming plans to purchase the Type 26 Global Combat Ship. This decision marks the largest defense procurement in Norway’s history and lays the foundation for a major modernization of its naval forces.

Built by BAE Systems for the Royal Navy, the Type 26 frigate is a cutting-edge vessel optimized for anti-submarine warfare, while also delivering capabilities in air defense, strike missions, and multi-role operations.

With a displacement of about 6,900 tonnes, the ship is fitted with a low-noise propulsion system, enabling effective submarine tracking in the deep waters of the North Atlantic. Its combat systems include the Sea Ceptor missile defense system, a 127 mm naval gun, and flexibility for additional weapon integrations. The ship also offers a spacious flight deck and hangar for helicopters and unmanned systems, along with a modular mission bay that can be tailored for tasks ranging from mine countermeasures to special operations support.
