The U.S. Army Contracting Command–Detroit Arsenal has placed an $89 million order for PLS A2 vehicles, installation kits, and upgrades under the Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles (FHTV) V contract. Marketed as “autonomy-ready,” the PLS A2 aligns with Army initiatives to accelerate supply movements through contested zones. The FHTV V contract, running until 2029, underpins brigade-level resupply of ammunition, fuel, and ISO containers under operational pressure.

The broader FHTV program also covers the Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck A4 and follows a long-standing approach of procuring families of vehicles built on shared commercial-military components. This standardization streamlines training, reduces maintenance burdens, and lowers lifecycle costs. The model also enables the recapitalization of older vehicles to current standards, so fleets advance incrementally through a mix of new builds and upgrades rather than abrupt replacements. For Army logistics, fleet availability and predictable sustainment matter more than sheer inventory counts.

The PLS A2’s design reflects three technical pillars. First, drive-by-wire controls enable autonomous functions and supervised convoy modes on public or high-threat routes. Second, active driver-assist systems—such as adaptive braking, stability management, and situational sensors—enhance crew safety and performance in demanding conditions. Third, an open digital backbone allows integration of future autonomy packages, control systems, and protection technologies without full redesigns. Together, these features support both current logistics demands and future Army modernization pathways.
