The U.S. government announced the approval of a $2.6 billion sale of HH-60W combat rescue helicopters and related gear to Norway, a NATO member sharing a border with Russia.

In a statement, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said the deal will strengthen Norway’s air combat and special operations capabilities, allowing it to better address current and future security challenges.

The agency noted that Norway would utilize the helicopters to support the defense of fellow NATO nations and has the capacity to integrate the assets effectively into its armed forces.

While the State Department has authorized the sale, final approval now rests with the U.S. Congress following DSCA’s official notification.
