The US Army has signed a $52-million agreement with Lockheed Martin to provide maintenance, operational support, and configuration services for its HIMARS and MLRS launcher systems, including parts storage and distribution facilities.

Work under the contract will take place in Grand Prairie, Texas, with completion scheduled for May 14, 2031.

Both HIMARS and MLRS are key components of the Army’s Long-Range Precision Fires program, aimed at enhancing modern fire support through integration with advanced weaponry like the Precision Strike Missile.

While the two systems fire identical munitions—such as GMLRS rockets and extended-range variants—their deployment roles differ significantly. HIMARS is a lightweight, highly mobile wheeled platform suited to rapid deployment and air transport, whereas the tracked MLRS provides robust protection and sustained firepower for intense battlefield environments.

Growing global demand has followed HIMARS’ operational success in conflicts involving Russia–Ukraine, against ISIS, and amid strategic tensions in the Indo-Pacific. Recent purchasers include Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and Estonia, among others.
