The Belgian Air Force has officially received its first three F-35A Lightning II aircraft from Lockheed Martin, marking a historic milestone in the nation’s airpower modernization and shift from fourth- to fifth-generation capabilities.
The new jets flew from the United States to the Azores, then continued to Florennes Air Base, completing a 12-hour journey to their new home.
Belgian and Lockheed Martin officials attended the handover ceremony celebrating the start of operational integration.
Belgium’s 2018 procurement of 34 F-35As has since grown to 45 aircraft, strengthening the country’s long-term defense posture.
Eight units remain in the US for pilot and technician training at Luke Air Force Base.
By 2030, the fleet will achieve full operational readiness, with Florennes and Kleine-Brogel serving as the main operating bases.
Four F-35As will perform NATO’s Quick Reaction Alert duties, ensuring rapid response to potential air threats.
Several of Belgium’s outgoing F-16s will be donated to Ukraine, supporting its air combat capabilities in the war against Russia.
