South Korea has green-lit the large-scale production of the L-SAM air and missile defense system, awarding Hanwha Aerospace a $480-million contract for interceptors and launchers scheduled for delivery by 2030. L-SAM employs advanced propulsion and control technologies to form the upper tier of Korea’s layered shield against ballistic threats. Hanwha Systems separately received a $243-million contract to build the system’s Multifunction Radar, with additional awards supporting L-SAM II development for extended-range, higher-altitude interception. Complementary contracts — including radar component production by firms such as Wavice — highlight Korea’s broader effort to strengthen its domestic missile-defense industrial base.
