Rheinmetall has secured a new German Army order for 30mm ammunition to equip the Puma infantry fighting vehicle, reinforcing Berlin’s ongoing investment in the platform.
Placed under a framework agreement signed in December 2022, the order covers 30×173 mm ammunition and is valued at several hundred million euros. The contract, valid through 2029, has been expanded to allow for higher delivery quantities and a greater overall financial scope.
Rheinmetall is now expected to supply several hundred thousand rounds, with the total value of the extended agreement estimated at around 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion). Deliveries under the updated arrangement have already begun.
The Puma IFV is fitted with Rheinmetall’s MK30-2/ABM 30mm cannon, which supports air-burst and programmable ammunition and offers an effective engagement range of more than 2,000 meters. The ammunition package includes the KE-TF round, optimized for engaging soft targets, lightly protected vehicles, and drones.
This procurement aligns with Germany’s wider effort to strengthen its Puma fleet. Earlier this month, the government awarded a 4.2-billion-euro contract to Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland for 200 additional Puma IFVs, with deliveries scheduled from mid-2028 and integration of the MELLS anti-tank missile system.
Germany has also approved Rheinmetall’s AGSP modular training system for Puma crews, a simulator designed to replicate combat and live-fire conditions using a dedicated command-and-control station and vehicle cabins reflecting the Puma’s internal configuration.
