Germany is advancing its armed forces modernization program with an order for 20 additional Airbus H145M helicopters valued at nearly €1 billion ($1.2 billion). Deliveries are scheduled between 2027 and 2029, expanding on a 2023 framework agreement that enables the procurement of up to 82 light utility helicopters, of which 62 have already been ordered.

According to a government finance paper, maintaining and operating the full fleet through 2048 will cost approximately €3 billion ($3.5 billion). The proposal is expected to be submitted to lawmakers shortly.

Unlike earlier purchases, the latest order focuses on enhancing both combat readiness and training capacity — with 15 aircraft configured for combat missions and five allocated for special forces training.

Funding for the acquisition will come from the special defense fund established in 2022 to accelerate Bundeswehr modernization following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The program will also benefit domestic industry partners, including Hensoldt, which will supply night-vision and electronic warfare systems, alongside other contractors responsible for avionics, communications, and weapons integration.
