India has inducted Taragiri, the fourth vessel in its Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) stealth frigate series, following a handover ceremony at MDL Mumbai. The delivery marks a key advance in India’s indigenous naval construction capability as it expands its frontline fleet to support Indo-Pacific security and deterrence.
The newly built Taragiri, carrying the yard number 12653, is the latest milestone in the Navy’s ongoing seven-ship frigate program and reflects the growing maturity of India’s naval industrial base. A modern reincarnation of the earlier INS Taragiri, the new frigate delivers a substantial upgrade in stealth shaping, combat systems, automation, and survivability across multi-domain operations.
Designed as a multi-mission stealth combatant, Taragiri integrates next-generation technologies including angular superstructure design, low-signature propulsion, and advanced infrared and radar signature management. Below the waterline, hydrodynamic refinements such as a bulbous bow and low-noise propulsion enhance sonar stealth and maneuvering efficiency—critical for anti-submarine warfare.
The frigate’s armament is centered around the BrahMos supersonic strike missile, offering high-precision engagements beyond 290 km. Its air-defense architecture features the MF-STAR multifunction radar and MRSAM vertical-launch missile system, enabling effective defense against aircraft, drones, and sea-skimming missiles. Complementary systems include a 76mm SRGM, 30mm close-in guns, RWS heavy machine guns, torpedo tubes, RBU-6000 ASW rockets, and integrated sonar capabilities, giving the vessel powerful layered maritime lethality.
