Armenia is in the final stages of negotiating a defense deal with India to acquire Sukhoi Su-30MKI multirole fighter jets, built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Valued at between $2.5 billion and $3 billion, the potential contract is viewed as a strategic response to Azerbaijan’s recent purchase of JF-17C Block-III fighters from Pakistan. Once formalized, it would become Armenia’s largest defense acquisition and mark a major milestone in its deepening military cooperation with India.

Under the proposed timeline, the first aircraft deliveries would commence by 2027. HAL plans to equip the Armenian fleet with Indian-developed Uttam AESA radar, Astra long-range missiles, and electronic warfare systems, making these aircraft among the most advanced Su-30MKIs produced for export.

India’s Flagship Fighter and Export Ambitions

Since entering Indian Air Force service in 2002, the Su-30MKI has evolved into the mainstay of India’s fighter fleet. Its supermaneuverable AL-31FP engines and versatile armament capacity of over 8 tons make it a formidable multirole platform capable of carrying precision-guided munitions and BrahMos-A cruise missiles.

The Super Sukhoi upgrade program, initiated in 2023, seeks to modernize more than 150 aircraft with digital cockpits, new radar systems, and improved sensor suites compatible with the Astra Mk-2 and Mk-3.

HAL has also been scaling up production and marketing the Su-30MKI internationally, positioning the fighter as a key component of India’s expanding aerospace exports — with Armenia now emerging as a leading customer candidate.
