Greece and Naval Group have finalized a contract to procure a fourth FDI frigate for the Hellenic Navy, covering the vessel’s construction, sustainment, and capability upgrades for the current FDI fleet. About 25% of the program’s components and workshare will come from Greek companies.
Valued at 982 million euros ($1.1 billion), the purchase follows formal negotiations with France’s Directorate for Defense Investments and Armaments. The new ship extends the FDI HN program launched in 2022, which originally included three frigates plus an option for a fourth. All three initial vessels are in production, with the first slated for delivery later this year.
FDI frigates are high-end, multi-role platforms equipped for air defense, submarine hunting, surface warfare, and asymmetric missions. Featuring a compact hull, advanced sensors, data-fusion technology, and cyber-resilient systems, they are built to operate independently or within NATO fleets. Automation reduces crew size and maintenance demands, while sea trials in Atlantic conditions have validated the class’s endurance and stability.
