Kawasaki Heavy Industries plans to test its new “New SSM” anti-ship missile in fiscal year 2027, a fact confirmed at the Tokyo International Aerospace Exhibition on October 17, 2024. The missile, a long-range cruise system, is intended to strike from outside enemy defensive zones. It features a compact, fuel-saving turbofan engine and wings for level flight, giving it an aircraft-like appearance. Due to its comparable capabilities and appearance to the U.S. Tomahawk, it is often called the “Japanese Tomahawk.”
