Hanwha Defense USA has confirmed that its K9 mobile howitzer will serve as the foundation of its proposal for the US Army’s Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) program. The initiative aims to replace the aging M777 155mm towed artillery systems with a fleet of over 400 advanced wheeled platforms, designed to enhance mobility and firepower across brigade combat teams, including lighter, rapidly deployable units.
The company emphasized that its MTC offering leverages the combat-proven K9 system, integrating key elements such as ammunition systems, propelling charges, fire control technologies, and command-and-control architecture into a cohesive solution. With more than 2,000 K9 units deployed worldwide, the platform brings a strong operational pedigree to the program.
Hanwha also outlined a localization approach to support its bid, focusing on establishing domestic production capabilities and enabling surge manufacturing capacity during conflict scenarios. Alabama will serve as the hub for these efforts, with facilities dedicated to assembly, logistics support, supplier network expansion, and workforce training. The initiative builds on Hanwha’s earlier $1.3 billion investment in an Arkansas-based munitions plant, underscoring its long-term commitment to US defence manufacturing.
