Forged in response to a decade of shifting combat realities, the Akeron family was conceived to meet the demands of armored warfare, urban engagements, and rapidly evolving threats. Designed for complex operational theaters, it blends extended range, networked targeting, and multi-mission adaptability to reshape land warfare doctrine.

From MMP to Akeron

Developed by MBDA, the missile lineage began with the MMP and MHT programs before converging into a unified fifth-generation system. In 2022, MBDA formally introduced the Akeron brand, encompassing the medium-range MP and long-range LP variants.

Rather than serving solely as an anti-tank weapon, Akeron was engineered as a digitally integrated precision strike system capable of adapting to real-time battlefield dynamics and linking into wider command networks.

Medium-Range Capability: Akeron MP

The Akeron MP delivers precision engagement against tanks, bunkers, light armored vehicles, and personnel across diverse terrain. It supports fire-and-forget and operator-controlled modes, including both lock-on-before-launch and lock-on-after-launch.

Its fiber-optic data link enables live video feedback, retargeting, and mission abort options. A dual-mode seeker combining infrared and television imaging ensures reliable performance in degraded visibility and complex urban settings.

Weighing approximately 15 kilograms, it is deployable from infantry launchers, vehicle mounts, naval platforms, or special forces teams. Its tandem multipurpose warhead offers tailored effects, while its effective range exceeds 4 kilometers operationally.

The integrated firing post — equipped with advanced optics, laser rangefinding, GPS, and digital navigation tools — acts as a compact reconnaissance and targeting node.

Long-Range Expansion: Akeron LP

The Akeron LP enhances the concept with beyond-line-of-sight strike capability, extending reach to between 8 and 20 kilometers. Designed for joint-force and expeditionary operations, it is optimized for top-attack engagements against main battle tanks and high-value distant targets.

Weighing under 40 kilograms, it can be fielded in modular launcher configurations compatible with MIL-1760 standards. A bidirectional RF data link and configurable warhead expand operational flexibility.

Future integration platforms include the Tiger Mk3, rotary-wing aircraft, UAVs, and armored vehicles.

Redefining Precision Strike

Akeron departs from legacy anti-tank missiles by offering genuine multi-role performance. Its selectable tandem warhead and digital guidance architecture enable operators to engage diverse targets within a single mission profile.

The combination of dual-mode sensing and real-time data transmission enhances decision-making and reduces misidentification risks — especially in dense, urban environments.

Crucially, its open digital architecture allows integration with drones, sensors, and battlefield management systems, ensuring compatibility with emerging network-centric doctrines.

International Footprint

France fields the Akeron MP widely within its armed forces. Belgium has committed to 761 missiles for Jaguar IFVs, while Luxembourg and Sweden have adopted the system. Egypt represents the first export customer outside Europe, and Cyprus has incorporated Akeron-equipped vehicles into its anti-armor units.

In June 2025, NATO established a procurement framework with MBDA for the Akeron MP, strengthening alliance-wide interoperability.

Strategic Trajectory

With modular design and scalable configurations, Akeron continues to evolve alongside drone-enabled targeting and multi-domain operations. Heavier and extended-range versions — including concepts like Akeron MBT 120 — indicate expansion into deeper strike and heavy-platform missions.

As future battlefields become increasingly interconnected and data-driven, Akeron positions itself not simply as a missile, but as a digitally networked strike capability designed for next-generation warfare.
