The US Air Force has released a new request for information (RFI) to defense contractors as part of its Next-Generation Air Refueling System (NGAS) program.

Launched in 2023, NGAS has already seen earlier RFIs, including a 2024 request focused on propulsion. The service aims to introduce the new tanker by 2040, though requirements have been repeatedly adjusted.

Currently, the Air Force operates Boeing’s KC-135 Stratotanker and KC-46 Pegasus. The KC-135, dating back to the 1950s, is still in service but nearing retirement, while the KC-46, based on the Boeing 767, is intended to replace portions of the aging fleet.

As outlined in the FY2026 defense budget request, the Pentagon is considering purchasing up to 75 more KC-46s instead of holding an interim tanker competition.

The KC-46, however, has faced numerous setbacks, including refueling boom flaws, fuel system issues, and problems with its remote vision technology. Deliveries were paused in March after cracks were found in two aircraft, resuming in May following inspections.
