German naval shipbuilder thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has partnered with VEM Technologies of India to produce heavyweight torpedoes domestically, marking an expansion of defense cooperation between the two companies.

The teaming agreement follows a memorandum of understanding signed in 2025 and will initially focus on supplying torpedoes for the Indian Navy’s submarine fleet. As part of the project, Atlas Elektronik—a TKMS subsidiary—will provide technology transfer and software licensing to support production at VEM’s manufacturing facilities.

Reports from Indian media indicate that the partnership could produce approximately 500 torpedoes per year once the program reaches full capacity.

Future Expansion

The cooperation may expand further to include joint development initiatives in upcoming torpedo programs. Over time, the companies are also considering forming a joint venture aimed at meeting India’s torpedo requirements and exploring export markets.

The partnership highlights TKMS’s growing involvement in India’s naval modernization programs. In a separate initiative last year, the company signed an agreement with CFF Fluid Control Limited to jointly develop and manufacture anti-submarine warfare technologies for naval vessels.

Additionally, a joint proposal from thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited was selected to construct six new conventional submarines for the **Indian Navy.
