The Aerospace Industrial Development Corp (AIDC) of Taiwan has introduced an 8-kilowatt fiber laser, advancing the nation’s push to strengthen its asymmetric defense capabilities.
Unveiled during the Taipei Aerospace & Defense Technology Exhibition, the solid-state system emits at approximately 1.07 micrometers, a wavelength optimized for operation in the island’s humid, coastal atmosphere.
Designed to engage targets up to 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) away, the laser is still in its testing phase, with current experiments restricted to a 150-meter (492-foot) range to ensure safe evaluation.
